A member of the rose family, raspberries have a wonderfully intense, sweet taste, and many consider them to be the finest flavoured of all the berries. Raspberries grow well in cool, damp climates, and the red varieties, such as Heritage and Malling Jewel, are the most commonly sold.  They are an essential ingredient in the classic English dessert, Summer pudding, and their flavour combines well with that of other berries.

Did you know – raspberries come in a variety of colours, red being the most popular but also black, purple and golden.

Description

Raspberries have significantly high levels of phenolic flavonoid phytochemicals such as anthocyanins, ellagic acid (tannin), quercetin, gallic acid, cyanidins, pelargonidins, catechins, kaempferol and salicylic acid. Scientific studies show that the antioxidant compounds in these berries play a potential role against cancer, ageing, inflammation, and neuro-degenerative diseases.

Delicious raspberries are low in calories and fats. Nonetheless, they are a rich source of dietary fibre and antioxidants. 100g of raspberries contain 11.94g carbohydrate, 0.65g fat, 6.5g fibre (16% of daily recommended intake), all for just 52 calories.
