Lemons – what is there to say about lemons? A lot..! All our lemons are unwaxed (whenever possible) and much bigger than supermarket bought lemons.   Why the need to wax lemons? I hear you ask… Well it can help to preserve the lemon for longer, that said lemons naturally create a waxy layer to protect the fruit, like apples. The main reason why we at Homegrown like them unwaxed is that we like fruit that has not been interfered with too much, its also perfect for zesting drizzle cakes etc  To remove the natural created wax during the growing process just simply wash under hot water.

Although the juicy yellow flesh is a little too sour to eat on its own, its citrus fragrance and tartness means it’s wonderful combined with all manner of ingredients and dishes, from sweet Lemon Drizzle Cake to savoury Moroccan Tangine.

Description

Juicy, acidic, but still flavourful, lemon is one of the most widely used citrus fruits worldwide. The fruit is a modified berry with tough, leathery rind. Lemon’s peel contains many volatile oil glands in pits. Interior flesh is composed of segments, called carpels, made up of numerous juice-filled vesicles that are specialized hair cells. Mature lemons turn yellow from green.  Lemons are acidic because of citric acid which aids in smooth digestion, and helps dissolve kidney stones.

A typical 100g portion of lemon contains 29 calories, 0.3g fat, 9.32g carbohydrates and 1.1g protein.
